/ For several years, the middle of the European Formula 1 season had a distinctive feel to it, as the Paul Ricard circuit, old Silverstone and old Hockenheim were grouped together over the summer. For 1991 it would be all change; the sunshine of Le Castellet was replaced by Magny-Cours while Silverstone was heavily remodelled.
/ After failing to qualify at the previous round in Mexico, Ivan Capelli was the star of the show at Paul Ricard. A pre-race test had solved several problems with the Adrian Newey-designed car. The Leyton House team elected to run without pitstops in France, and Capelli came within three laps of taking a maiden F1 win.
/ The Larousse-run Lola Lamborghinis enjoyed an upturn in performance at Paul Ricard. Aguri Suzuki studies a dash-mounted timing monitor before attempting a qualifying run
/ Senna leads Patrese, Berger, Boutsen, Piquet, Mansell, Alesi, Warwick and Martini. Eventual winner Prost, starting from 13th, is not visible. The four-time world champion picked the 1990 Mexican Grand Prix for his AUTOSPORT 'Race of My Life'.
/ Martin Donnelly and Derek Warwick in private battle. The drivers would bring their cars home for top-10 finishes for the Norfolk team, but no points.
/ Nigel Mansell completed a daring manoeuvre around the outside of Berger at Peraltada on the last lap to steal second place. Together with race winner Prost, the podium men appear to be pleased with their afternoon's work.
/ Varying fortunes for the Ferrari team in qualifying. Mansell would start from fourth, while Prost, who had opted for a low-downforce set-up, struggled to 13th.
/ Canadian Grand Prix winner Ayrton Senna leads the field on a gloomy day. A potential win for Gerhard Berger went begging after the Austrian jumped the start. Berger crossed the finish line first, but after a one-minute penalty was applied found himself demoted to third, 14 seconds behind Senna. Senna would leave Canada on 31 points at the head of the drivers' championship, Prost on third had 19 points.
/ Bertand Gachot's attempt to pre-qualify the Coloni with its Motori-Moderni designed Subaru-badged engine ended in a spin into the gravel. The team would later switch to a Cosworth DFR, but would fail to qualify for any of the 16 races.
/ Combative Gregor Foitek displaced Stefan Johannson for a seat at Monterverdi Onyx. The Swiss was fighting to maintain an important sixth place and championship point when he was knocked off by Eric Bernard's Lola Lamborghini, seen chasing here.
/ As Senna disappears from view, Alesi's Tyrrell Cosworth chases Prost at the Loews hairpin on the opening lap of the restarted race. On the first try, a crash involving Gerhard Berger and Prost at the Mirabeau had blocked the road.
/ Nigel Mansell had a troubled start to his Monaco weekend and would qualify down in seventh. After damaging his front wing attempting to pass Thierry Boutsen at the chicane, Mansell produced a charging comeback to fourth, only to drop out with a battery issue 15 laps from home.
/ Ayrton Senna enters Casino Square on way to Monaco win number three. The Brazilian was dominant until slowing dramatically in the final few laps, allowing Jean Alesi to close to with a second at the finish.
/ The McLarens lead into Tosa. Dust in the background would contribute to a spin for Lotus racer Martin Donnelly in the braking area, but the Irishman would continue.
