/ A playful Ayrton Senna pulls down Gerhard Berger's cap on the podium in Hockeheim. Senna's championship was back on track after a fourth victory of the season moved him ahead of Silverstone winner Alain Prost in the standings.
/ Alessandro Nannini ran throughout the German Grand Prix without a tyre change on his light, V8 Ford-powered Benetton, and almost succeeded in fending off the potent McLaren Honda of Ayrton Senna.
/ Trouble at Brabham as David Brabham watches over a smoking Judd of team-mate Stefano Modena in Germany. Modena's strong showing in 1990 would earn him a seat at the fancied Tyrrell team for '91, but the combination of Mugen Honda power, Tyrrell chassis and Pirelli tyres transpired to be less competitive than team boss Ken Tyrrell would have hoped for back in 1990.(Future commentator James Allen can be seen here flicking through his notes in the background.)
/ Nigel Mansell announces his retirement to the BBC's Jonathan Palmer, taking time out from Joest Porsche and McLaren testing duties. Ferrari's press officer watches on.
/ Alain Prost waves to fans after recording his second successive British Grand Prix win. The victory moved Prost into the championship lead on 41, two points ahead of Ayrton Senna.
/ Silverstone marked the final chance for the minnows to score a result before a revised pre-qualifying group was arranged for the second half of the season, starting from round nine in Hockenheim. Larousse would escape while fellow French squad Ligier would be demoted. Gabriele Tarquini's AGS team, pictured here, would remain stuck in the dreaded pre-qualifying, which allowed just the top-four to progress to qualifying proper, but the Italian had the consolation of scraping onto the grid at Silverstone in 26th place.
/ Ayrton Senna leads Nigel Mansell. The Brazilian would have a scrappy race, making a mistake and spinning on the exit of Copse, before recovering to take third.
/ The British Formula 3 championship still had its lustre in 1990 and was a regular on the British Grand Prix support bill. Emerson Fittipladi fan Ayrton Senna takes time out to chat to Christian Fittipaldi, who was racing for Senna's old team West Surrey Racing. On the subject of young drivers, Nigel Mansell lent his name to the Madgwick Mansell F3000 team in 1990, running Andrea Montermini and Jean-Marc Gounon, and whilst assembling this gallery AUTOSPORT found pictures of Gerhard Berger giving advice to Marko F3000 driver Karl Wendlinger.
/ Aguri Suzuki's Larousse leads Paul Ricard hero Ivan Capelli into Stowe. The second Larousse of Eric Bernard, picture here behind Alessandro Nannini's Benetton, would take a fine fourth place, while Suzuki finished sixth.
/ David Brabham had a torrid rookie season in Formula 1. The talented Aussie would qualify for just eight races, France being one of them, as he struggled in the shadow of team-leader Stefano Modena.
/ Emanuele Pirro outbrakes himself at Paul Ricard's Turn 1 and spins his BMS Dallara, in front of Nicola Larini. Pierluigi Martini is also visible. Some 15 Italian drivers would attempt to qualify during the 1990 season.
